Urban Wood in Design: Innovative Approaches for Every Project

Online: Wednesday, February 12, 2025
12pm - 1:15pm EST

Urban Ashes® operates at both ends of the supply chain, addressing the raw natural resource infrastructure and end markets to establish Urban Wood circular economies. In this working group, Paul Hickman, founder and owner of Urban Ashes will bring over 25 years of expertise and experience in design and manufacturing to demonstrate how to utilize urban wood in your design projects beyond just a decorative focal piece, i.e. the beautiful 'live edge table' that has dominated our attention and featured in the glossy magazines.

The urban wood industry is not a new concept, but it has experienced significant growth and development over the past decade. The availability of urban wood and the infrastructure to support its use have become much more robust, making this "sustainable material" increasingly accessible. For the first time, industry standards, certifications, and the ability to track carbon data are available, simplifying the integration of urban wood into carbon reduction and other sustainability initiatives. The foundation is set—the industry is ready, and the supply chain is prepared. Now, as Paul emphasizes, what’s needed are architects, designers, builders, manufacturers, and specifiers to deepen their understanding of this resource, learn how to specify it effectively, and implement it in their projects.

Paul Hickman is the visionary founder and CEO of Urban Ashes, a leading consultancy company in the urban wood industry. Starting with a 10-year background in the scenic arts industry then adding over 25 years of experience in the urban wood industry, Paul has been at the forefront of transforming reclaimed urban wood into high-quality, sustainable products.

We specialize in designing, implementing, and managing municipal wood recycling programs. Through our Circular UrbanWood Triconomy™ (CUT Model™) in collaboration with municipalities, we create systems and networks to optimize the use of fallen urban trees as valuable local resources. This not only reduces disposal costs and increases local jobs and wood resources, but also contributes to carbon sequestration, lowering our community’s carbon footprints.
